Smoky BBQ Lupini Baked Beans
Ingredients
- All the cooked lupini beans from your 14 oz dry bag, drained
- 12 oz bacon, chopped
- 14 oz smoked sausage, diced
- 1 large onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter or bacon grease
- 1 can tomato sauce, 15 oz
- 5 oz can tomato paste
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons liquid aminos, soy sauce, or coconut aminos
- 1-/4 cup brown sweetener
- 1 tablespoon molasses, optional
- 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, optional
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups beef broth or water
- Salt, only if needed at the end
Instructions
- Prepare Lupini Beans according to Package Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Take about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of the cooked lupini beans and roughly chop or lightly mash them. Do not turn them into paste. This helps the sauce thicken and cling to the beans.
- In a large Dutch oven or deep oven-safe skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until browned.
- Add the diced smoked sausage and cook for another 3–4 minutes, until it picks up some color.
- Add the onion and cook for 4–5 minutes, until softened.
- Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add the butter or extra bacon grease, tomato sauce, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire, mustard, liquid aminos, brown sweetener, molasses, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne, liquid smoke, and broth, using it to deglaze the Dutch Oven.
- Stir until everything is smooth and saucy.
- Add the cooked lupini beans and stir well.
- Simmer on the stove for 10–15 minutes so the beans start absorbing the flavor.
- Cover and bake for 45 minutes.
- Uncover, stir, and bake another 30–45 minutes, until the sauce is thick, sticky, smoky, and darkened around the edges.
- If the beans get too dry, add a splash of broth.
- If the sauce is too loose, bake uncovered longer.
- Let rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.
A small splash of apple cider vinegar for brightness
- A tiny drizzle of sugar-free BBQ sauce
- Extra crispy bacon on top
That gives you the full cookout baked bean vibe: smoky, tangy, sweet, bacon-rich, and not loaded with sugar.
